Here in Jackson we focus much attention on LGBTQ Equality and Reproductive Justice. We organize and participate in actions that raise awareness on issues and protest injustice. We monitor the MS legislature to make sure that the rights of women and LGBTQ Mississippians are not challenged or taken away. We have educational events for the public to bring awareness to issues that may be confusing or controversial. Anything that effects the lives of women is something NOW is working or is interested in working on.

We Support, Educate, and Advoate for a Better, Safer World

Our local chapter provides a confidential, private safe-haven for parents, friends, and families of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people; as well as GLBT individuals. We welcome all who need a place to discuss coming out, social issues, relationships with families and/or communities after coming out. We will provide support by careful listening, sharing of personal stories and relating of problem solving experiences. We are sensitive to each person’s stage in the acceptance process. We are supportive rather than confrontational, wishing to create a comfortable atmosphere for all group participants in which everyone is free to speak, or not speak.

The ACLU of Mississippi has been a strong ally of Mississippi's LGBT and minority communities.

The principles guiding the ACLU of Mississippi are simple and clear:

The right to free expression—above all, the freedom to dissent from the official view and majority;

The right to equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion, National origin, sexual orientation, age or handicap;

The right of fair play in encounters with government institutions—courts, schools, police, bureaucracy—and with the repositories of great private power;

The right to be let alone—to be secure from spying, from the promiscuous and unwarranted collection of personal information, and from interference in our private lives.

These guarantees of liberty are not self-enforcing. Those with power often undermine the rights of individuals and groups who lack the political influence, the numerical strength or the money to secure their birthright of freedom. That is why the efforts of the ACLU of Mississippi—in the courts, in the legislature, and in the public forum—have most often been on behalf of people with the special vulnerability of the powerless.
