Driving nails in our own coffins. I have a gut fealing we are spending way too much time on the subject of Gay Marriage and the repeal of DOMA. We are closer, in my opinion, to over turning Don't Ask Don't Tell than we are DOMA on a state by State level. Do we want a Federal Repeal of Statute such as Don't Ask Don't Tell or would we settle for our friends in California to be wed. Mississippi is no closer to repealing than we were winning the vote in the first place. We are the buckle of the bible belt. But with that said we have some chances to make some huge mvoes for the Department of Defense. With the bases on the coast, Meridian Air Field and State of the Art Camp Shelby We have access to someof the highest ranking commanders in the military. Our own Ex-governor Ray Mabus, is now Secretary of the Navy. Our own Senator Wicker is Ranking Member of one of Six Sub Committees of the Senate Armed Services Commitee. Our own Representative Gene Taylor, District 4, is Chair of one of Seven Sub Committees of the House Armed Services Commitee. These are policy makers and we as the LGBT community need to reach out and find people in the community that have the ear to these men, phone their offices, write them letters. let your friends and family know how rto contact them. Have petitions signed to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell. We also have a great number of retirees here and the upper brass have always and will always weigh their opinions heavily in the policy making process. Gay vets are a force to be heard loud on Capital Hill. And think about it, once they let LGBT serve the government will have to find a way to recognize dependents of those servicemembers. That is when the War for our rights state by state can be won!!! All we need is one offical DOD or IRS document recognizing our partners and families and we can claim victory.
The right wing wants us to blow up the DOMA fight so big we all end up with egg on our faces, remember we fight but we also fight on many many fronts. I encourage my Mississippians to PRO-ACTIVE not RE-ACTIVE===== Call your people in DC tell them which way to vote do not wait and call to tell them you are disappointed in their vote, as we say in Mississippi that is closing the gate after all the cows got out!. think 202 area code that is Capital Hill. Find someone that has the ear of Ray Mabus from here that could really help tremendously.
