Hate Crimes Bill is now Hate Crimes Law

With Congress’ passage of a long-awaited hate crimes prevention law, Mississippi’s gay and lesbian residents are poised to be legally protected from physical attacks no matter where they are in the country. According to the Anti-Defamation League, 20 states, including Mississippi, do not have hate crime prevention based on sexual orientation. 17% of all hate crimes in the US are because of sexual orientation.

A Wesson student is fighting back after being excluded from her high school yearbook for wearing men’s clothing in her class photo. While the ACLU seeks to handle the legal aspects, our community can show our support by contacting Copiah County Schools Superintendent Rickey Clopton and CC Ronald Greet, the principal of Wesson Attendance Center. Get involved and show this Mississippi teen that we support her!

That is why we are starting a communications campaign and encourage LGBT organizations, churches, business and everyone else that believes in equality to participate (that means you). The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. 5th Annual Pride Picnic

Unity Mississippi’s 5th Annual Pride Picnic will be on May 30, 2009 from 2-6pm at Mayes Lake. We’ve reserved a pavilion and will have a rainbow flag to identify our area. 
The park offers a natural science museum, hiking, a lake, and much more.
Official time: 2-6pm, Saturday, May 30, 2009. Feel free to come early or stay late and enjoy the site!
Bring food, drinks, picnic blanket and basket, frisbees, or your favorite outdoor fun and join us! There are public grills available for use. The park is pet friendly (leashes required).
