Unity Mississippi responds to Operation Save America

Unity Mississippi, a Mississippi-based, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organization, is outraged at the destruction and burning of a rainbow flag by members of Operation Save America on Tuesday, July 18, 2006. This flag represents the diversity of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities and the community at-large that supports freedom and celebrates diversity. The burning of the flag and Operation Save America’s bigoted position on gay and lesbian individuals and families, as well as our allies, is hateful and attempts to invoke terror and fear within Mississippi’s communities.

Unity Mississippi feels these actions do not reflect the values of most Mississippians regardless of their position on homosexuality, Islam, abortion, and women’s rights. We also feel that Mississippians do not support such acts of hatred, terrorism and bigotry. It is time that Mississippians stand up and encourage their family, friends, and neighbors to support equality without prejudice and expel such acts of hatred and intolerance within our state.
